Religious Studies is referred to as the intellectual field of multi-disciplinary, secular study of various religious values, behaviors, as well as institutions. It compares, describes interprets, and explains religion by emphasizing the orderly, historically based, and cross-cultural view points. Religious Studies is the examination of the expression of religion in human culture. It explores various human ideas as well as the way religious concepts are expressed in different, rituals, texts and belief systems. It also involves the study of the history of religion as well as about the numerous important religious figures. Theology is an area that tries to comprehend the nature of transcendent or supernatural forces (for example deities), where as religious studies, in contrast, tries to study the religious behavior and beliefs from the exterior of any particular religious perspective.

The term "religion" is derived from the Latin word "religio", which was nominalized from one of the following three verbs: "relegere" (meaning to turn in order to constantly or to observe conscientiously); "religare" (meaning to bind oneself); and "reeligere" (meaning to choose again). An etymological analysis alone does not resolve the indistinctness of defining religion, as each of these three different meanings include points to a different understanding of what religion actually is. However, during the Medieval Period, the word "religious" was used to depict someone who had joined a monastic order (or a "religious").
The general study of religion can be dated back to Hecataeus of Miletus (ca. 550BCE - c. 476 BCE) and Herodotus (ca. 484 BCE -425 BCE). However, it was during the Middle Ages that Islamic scholars began to study Persian, , Christian, Indian, Jewish religions. The first history of religion was, written by scholar Muhammad al-Shahrastani and is titled the Treatise on the Religious and Philosophical Sects. Religious Studies was introduced in the nineteenth century when scholarly and historical analysis of the Bible had thrived, and Hindu and Buddhist texts were being translated into European languages for the first time. . In its early years, it was known as the Science of Religion or Comparative Religion. In fact, in the United States of America, there are individuals who know the field as the History of religion even today. Some of the early influential scholars include Friedrich Max Müller, and Cornelius P. Tiele. In modern times, Religious Studies is undertaken by scholars all around the world.
